Sometimes, during assembly, it is necessary to bond parts of furniture which have been varnished, lacquered or painted. Chemique has launched unique two-component adhesive that is ideal for this purpose, overcoming all the problems of adhering treated surfaces and avoid recourse to sanding. Protak 710, when mixed with hardener, can also be used for bonding a variety of plastic materials, metals and other non absorbent products where one of the parts to be adhered has a porous surface. The final bond meets the water and heat resistant standards of DIN 68603, Group D4. The addition of 3-7% of hardener enhances the adhesive power of the product, resulting in an improvement in the cohesive strength of the glue line.
Protak 710 has high solids and a viscosity that lends itself to both roller application and spraying. It is also a perfect product for softforming and postforming. The adhesive is suitable for heat reactivation, has high initial bond, good heat resistance with the added advantage of excellent water resistance, for the production of kitchen and bathroom tops. When bonding plastic materials, high gloss PVC foils, ABS and polystyrene, problems can arise, particularly during cold seasons, which are mostly due to the nature of these materials which react negatively to cold by shrinking. The use of rigid adhesives can therefore cause the foils to become detached from the primer and consequently detached from the substrate. A plasticised adhesive, such as Protak 710, enables this problem to be avoided due to its elasticity giving good adhesion. Other applications for Protak 710 are the bonding of aluminium film and metals onto wood and wood based panels where the flexibility of the adhesive, particularly at high temperatures, allows good adhesion. Here, the different coefficients of thermal expansion of wood and metal can create stresses which may lead to the coating becoming detached on cooling, with other, more rigid adhesives. Protak 710 has hence been used in the automotive industry with one of the leading manufacturers of classic luxury cars for veneered dashboard components. Finally, another popular use for Protak 710 is for high frequency bonding for edging panels with thick solid wood and PVC lippings. The use of a thermoplastic glue such as Protak 710 is particularly suited for joints which have substantial tolerances or with wood which is not well seasoned and therefore tends to move in time, requiring a more elastic bond line.
